JR Hokkaido follows suit, 50% off on 6-day rail passes

From the current data and the daily count of cases, it seems that the coronavirus pandemic in Japan is not going away soon, but the government as well as the private sectors are actively finding ways to keep the economy going.

Apart from the 100,000 cash payout for all Japan residents, several other subsidies are also being offered by the government such as rent subsidy and up to 1 million yen financial aid to freelancers and self-employed who has at least 50% income drop because of the pandemic. 

Campaigns are also being launched to help revive the domestic economy and support small businesses affected by the shortfall of travel during the crisis.

There’s METI’s Go To campaign that will pay for about half the cost of your domestic trip. It is set to start on July 22. There is also JR East’s half price promo for shinkansen tickets starting on August 20.

JR Hokkaido will also start a 50% discount for the Hokkaido Love 6-Day Pass. This pass allows you to travel around Hokkaido for 6 full days with unlimited rides to any JR trains and buses within the prefecture. The exceptions are Shinkansen trains, green cars, buses traveling between Sapporo and Asahikawa, Sapporo and Obihiro, Sapporo and Mombetsu, Sapporo and Erimo, Sapporo and Hiroo.

From July 17, 2020 to January 25, 2021 the ticket price will be sold for only 12,000 yen which is half its original price. You can purchase these passes at any Hokkaido JR station ticket counter, or travel centers in Japan.

Note that the pass must be redeemed within a month of purchasing it and can be used anytime from July 23 2020 to January 31 2021 except for the peak season which is between August 10 -19 and December 26 – January 6.
