¥1.7 Trillion “Go To” Campaign: Japan Will Pay For Your Travel, Dining, and Shopping

Yesterday, May 25th 2020 the Japanese government lifted the state of emergency in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa.

Before Prime minister Shinzo Abe officially made the announcement, the head of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Yasutoshi Nishimura had a press conference about the “Go To campaign”.

What is the “Go To Campaign”?

At present, COVID-19 is making a huge negative impact on the economy of Japan most especially on the tourism, food and service, and entertainment industry. The Go To campaign aims to encourage people to give support to the said industries.

Go To Travel Campaign!

When you purchase a domestic plane ticket or tour through a travel agency, you will be given a coupon, the value of which will be 50% of your booking’s cost. The coupon’s value can be up to ¥20,000. This can be used to pay for accommodations, local restaurants, souvenirs, etc.

Go To Eat Campaign!

When you make an online reservation at a restaurant, you will be awarded with points that can reach up to ¥1000. Aside from this, there will also be premium coupons from the government which can be used in selected registered restaurants.

Go To Event Campaign!

When you purchase tickets on events like concerts, shows, and sports matches, you will get a 20% discount coupon.

Go To Shotengai Campaign!

Shotengai are traditional “shopping streets” found in almost every town and all over cities in Japan.
Aside from the daily use items, there are unique foods and souvenirs that can only be found here. In line with the campaign, the government will allot a budget to come up with events, programs, and new products for tourists to help keep the spirit of the shotengai alive.

Details To Follow

As of now, the specifics like the websites that will be used for bookings, how the coupons will be distributed, and the until when the campaign will take place have not yet been announced. METI only mentioned that the campaign will probably launch around the end of July.
